Dream Theater 2026 – Music Photography
1. Research
Given the importance of the assignment, I conducted extensive research on the band’s performance style, stage production, and lighting design. I also studied the venue’s media regulations and concert photography protocols to ensure I could deliver high-quality images while working within the strict limitations typically imposed on professional music photographers. The result was a successful photo coverage that captured the energy, atmosphere, and visual identity of the performance. 15 minutes only and no video in the pit.
2. production
During the limited 15-minute shooting window granted to photographers, I focused on capturing each member of the band individually while also documenting the energy and engagement of the audience in the front rows.
My primary objective was to freeze movement and capture authentic expressions, ensuring that every image conveyed the intensity of the live performance. To achieve this, I prioritized fast shutter speeds over all other camera settings, as I wanted to avoid motion blur and deliver sharp, high-impact images with strong composition.
The challenging concert lighting conditions required careful exposure management and quick adaptation throughout the performance. Since I did not have access to in-camera visual effects or specialty filters, I used Adobe Photoshop during post-production to recreate and enhance certain atmospheric effects while maintaining a natural and professional concert-photography aesthetic.
The final image selection was designed to showcase both the musicianship of the band members and the connection between the performers and their audience, capturing the energy and visual identity of the concert experience.

The Crowd
Documenting the energy and engagement of the audience in the front rows is always very important.
3. Results
Despite the strict 15-minute shooting window and challenging lighting conditions, I successfully captured every band member, audience interactions, and the overall atmosphere of the concert. The final gallery delivered sharp, dynamic images that reflected the energy and visual identity of Dream Theater’s performance.
An additional challenge was the tight deadline: I was required to deliver 15 fully edited, publication-ready images before 10:00 AM the following morning. This demanded an efficient workflow, strong image selection skills, and a fast yet consistent post-production process under significant time pressure.
This project marked an important milestone in my career, providing valuable experience in media pit workflows, concert photography, and working under pressure in a large-scale venue.
Venue: Movistar Arena, Bogotá
Artist: Dream Theater – Parasomnia Tour 2026
Coverage Window: 15 minutes (media pit access)
Deliverables: 15 next-day edited images and final concert photo gallery
Focus: Artist portraits, stage performance, and audience interaction
Outcomes
This assignment was both challenging and rewarding. Beyond the opportunity to photograph an incredible band, it exposed me to the realities of large-scale concert photography. Unlike shooting in smaller venues, the distance between the photographers and performers, combined with complex stage lighting, made composition and exposure significantly more demanding. Capturing the drummer, in particular, proved challenging without a longer telephoto lens or a higher-resolution camera that would allow for more aggressive cropping.
One of the most valuable lessons from this project was the importance of understanding a media outlet’s content workflow and delivery requirements. I submitted the photographs in multiple formats to provide flexibility, assuming their publishing tools would support different aspect ratios. However, the final selection was adapted to a single format, which resulted in some images being excluded. Better communication at the beginning of the project would have allowed me to deliver assets tailored specifically to their publishing process and maximize the use of the final gallery.
Overall, the experience strengthened both my technical and professional skills, reinforcing the importance of preparation, adaptability, and clear communication when working with media organizations and large-scale live events.
